The shoot that reminded us why local matters

I (Sherise) recently worked alongside a city agency on a photography project.

They rocked up with a team of 3.

I was solo, with Zara jumping in for one day.

I’ll be honest: I was a little nervous.

I’ve worked agency-side before, and the pace can be very different.

Their process was structured and fast.

Mine is usually more flexible, because we’re working with real businesses on real days.

We were there for different reasons, and that’s the key point.

Quick context: I was brought in as a second photographer because their deliverables were fairly limited. They were focusing on “hero” advertising images. My role was to capture practical, usable content for social media and ongoing marketing.

And that difference matters.

Because most small businesses do not need five perfect shots.

They need a library of content that actually gets used.

That shoot reminded me of why Soda gets strong results for Gippsland businesses.

Not because we have fancy gear.

Because we know this area, and we know how to work with the people in it.

Here’s what truly sets Soda apart

1) We make real people feel comfortable (fast)

In Gippsland, we rarely work with professional models.

It’s usually business owners.

Staff.

Friends and family doing everyone a favour.

Most people turn up feeling awkward.

That is normal.

Our job is to get people relaxed quickly, so the photos look like them, not like they’re trying to “pose.”

2) We listen to the people who actually live the business

What stood out was how different the focus can be on a bigger, campaign-style shoot.

There’s usually a tight shot list, and it needs to be delivered.

But for small businesses, the “extra” moments are often the money makers.

The day-to-day details.

The staff interactions.

The things customers ask about.

We take time to ask what matters to the business.

Then we capture it.

Because content works better when it’s built around real priorities, not just a glossy brief.

3) We blended in (so the day can keep moving)

We’re not trying to turn your workplace into a film set.

We keep things practical:

  • Minimal gear

  • Solid prep and research

  • The right PPE or attire

  • Efficient shooting (no dragging it out)

In Gippsland, people are working while we shoot.

Customers are walking through.

Events keep happening.

So we work quietly, respectfully, and quickly.

That’s how you get content that feels real and looks polished.

Being local is not a cute bonus.

It changes how the shoot runs.

And it changes what you walk away with.

The bottom line

That shoot was a really good reminder of something I think a lot of small business owners already feel.

Content lands better when the team behind the camera understands the people, the place, and the pace.

That is the advantage of working with a local commercial photographer who knows Gippsland.

If you are planning a campaign, a brand refresh, or a content shoot and you want images that feel real, look polished, and get used across socials, web, and print, we can help.
