4 Simple Ways To Get Better Phone Footage: Without Buying a New iPhone

Ever filmed a Reel and thought, “Why does this look… foggy?”

Nine times out of ten, it’s not your phone.

It’s the tiny stuff that happens before you hit record.

Here are four simple tweaks we use on shoots at Soda Creatives (and teach clients for the DIY days) to make phone footage look more intentional.

1. Clean your lens (yes, every single time)

Your phone camera is probably fine.

The real villain is fingerprints.

Your phone lives in pockets, handbags, car cup holders and on café tables. Your lens cops makeup, dust and life grime all day.

Before you film:

  • Wipe the lens with a soft cloth or your t‑shirt

  • Do front and back lenses

  • Wipe your screen too (a smudgy screen makes you think your footage is worse than it is)

This takes 5 seconds.

It’s the easiest way to go from hazy to crisp.

2. Shoot in 4K (even if you’re not posting in 4K)

We don’t deliver every client video in 4K, and you don’t need to either. But when we can, we shoot in 4K.

Why? Because it gives you breathing room in the edit.

When you film in 4K, you can:

  • Crop in without your video turning into a blurry mess

  • Fix slightly off composition without re‑shooting everything

  • Punch in for close‑ups or detail shots and still keep things crisp

Think of it as future‑proofing your footage.

You’re recording in a higher quality than you technically “need”, so you’ve got options later.

Quick action step:

  • Head into your camera settings

  • Set your rear video camera to 4K (25 or 30fps is perfect for most business content)

  • Leave your export settings (for Reels, TikTok etc.) as they are – they’ll still look better thanks to the higher‑quality original

Record high. Export normal. Your videos will thank you.

3. Fix your audio (because people will scroll if they can’t hear you)

If we are going to be honest people will forgive “okay” visuals.

They will not forgive painful audio.

If you’re talking to camera, filming interviews, or explaining something important, audio is doing most of the heavy lifting. If it’s muffled, windy, or drowned out by espresso machines, people disappear.

Before you hit record, do a 10‑second sound check:

  • Where are you standing? Move away from busy roads, loud fridges, and screaming kettles

  • Is there wind? If yes, tuck yourself into a doorway, corner, or car, or face away from the wind

  • Can you invest in a mic? A tiny wireless mic can make a huge difference

In our own shoots, we love using small wireless mics like the DJI Minis for talking content – especially on location when we can’t control the background noise as much.

Your new rule of thumb:

If you’re thinking, “Hmm, it sounds a bit noisy,” your audience will think, “I can’t be bothered.” Sort the audio first.

4. Stabilise your phone (goodbye shaky‑hands)

We’ve all seen it: great idea, good lighting… and footage that looks like it was filmed during an earthquake.

You don’t need a full studio set‑up to fix this. Start with your body, then bring in gear when you’re ready.

Body hack: become a human gimbal

Try this next time you’re filming:

  • Hold your phone with two hands

  • Tuck your elbows into your sides

  • Soften your knees a little

  • Rotate or move from your hips, not your arms

You’ll instantly feel more steady, and your footage will look more intentional, especially for pan shots and walk‑throughs.

Gear upgrades when you’re ready:

  • A tripod for talking‑to‑camera or sit‑down videos

  • A gimbal for smooth walk‑throughs, behind‑the‑scenes, or space tours

Less wobble, more “did they hire a videographer for this?”

Your 30‑second “Before You Film” checklist

Next time you’re about to record content for your biz, run through this super quick list:

  • ✅ Lens is clean

  • ✅ Camera is set to 4K

  • ✅ You’ve done a 5–10 second audio test

  • ✅ You’re steady (body or tripod/gimbal helping you out)

Four tiny tweaks. Massive difference.

You don’t need a studio. You don’t need the latest phone.

You just need to be a little more intentional before you tap that record button.
